Hey
Is it just us, or does every new tool, plugin, or “AI breakthrough” promise to simplify our lives yet somehow the stack keeps getting heavier?
The promise is always seductive. “This will replace five other tools.” “This plugin will automate the boring parts.” “This AI feature will make your workflow seamless.” But somewhere between the first download and the third update, that “one neat addition” becomes just another layer of maintenance, complexity, and distraction.
It’s the paradox of the modern design and tech stack: the very tools meant to lighten our load often end up weighing us down. And it’s not just about digital clutter, it’s about mental overhead. Every new platform requires learning curves, context switching, and constant re-evaluation of whether it’s truly worth keeping.
Maximalists thrive on abundance. They like having every option on hand, believing that breadth equals capability. Minimalists, on the other hand, aim for precision, keeping only what earns its place through daily utility. But most of us live in the messy middle: clinging to tools “just in case” while chasing the novelty of the next thing.
There’s a discipline to subtraction. Knowing what not to include takes as much skill as adding something new. And sometimes, the most forward-thinking design choice is to resist the temptation to add. Whether that’s a menu item, a book lying on your desk, or the “next big AI integration” in your workflow.
So maybe the real question isn’t “Are you a maximalist or minimalist?” but “When was the last time you consciously removed something from your stack?
